Karnataka girl, Srinidhi Sheety, becomes second Indian to win Miss Supranational 2016
MUMBAI: India has earned yet another feather in the cap as far as beauty pageants go. Mangaluru girl, Srinidhi Shetty , was crowned Miss Supranational 2016 at a grand ceremony in Krynica Zdroj, Poland on Friday . She also won the title of Miss Asia-Oceania.
Srinidhi became the second Indian to win the title after Asha Bhat in 2014. India is the first country to win Miss Supranational twice in three years. Miss Supranational along with Miss World and Miss Universe is among the top three beauty pageants on the planet.
The 23-year-old engineer, who studied in Bengaluru, beat 80 contestants to the finish line. “Unlike other pageants, the jury did not ask questions. Instead, the five finalists were told to ask one another questions. The Venezuelan contestant asked me what my biggest takeaway from this event was. I replied that being part of a multitude of women from different countries and religions, all of whom were vying for a common goal yet staying happily under one roof, was an enriching experience,“ Srinidhi said. That answer won her the crown that came with substantial prize money of $30,000.
She laughed and added, “I am on cloud nine. Winning this prestigious pageant is a proud moment not just for me and my family but our country as well. I am thankful to Vineet Jain and the Times Group for providing me the opportunity .“
Venezuela’s Valeria Vespoli was placed second followed by Suriname’s Jaleesa Pigot. Ornella Gunesekere of Sri Lanka came fourth while Hungary’s Korinna Kocsis finished fifth.
Srinidhi had tasted her first major success when she was crowned Yamaha Fascino Miss Diva Supranational India 2016.
Her father Ramesh said over the phone, “This is a very happy moment for all of us. We were praying for her victory while watching the live telecast of the pageant, and wept with joy when our wish came true. Srinidhi has taken a degree in engineering from Bengaluru and had been participating in sundry events locally. She got her big break with the Miss Diva contest and we did not deny her wish at all. .In fact, both her mother and I supported her.“
