The one award that makes your book tradable

Who doesn’t love an award for what he does? Right from our kindergarten until our death, we expect awards or gifts. It is not only a form of appreciation, but also a form of motivation. It keeps the person in high spirits and keeps nudging him about how best he can do. ‘Man Booker Prize’ is one such award given for best written novels in United Kingdom. Initially it was applicable only to the citizens of Commonwealth, Ireland and Zimbabwe. Later on, it’s applicability extended to any English novels. The Booker Prize is greeted with great anticipation and fanfare. It is also a mark of distinction for authors to be selected for inclusion in the shortlist or even to be nominated for the “long list”. The prize money awarded with the Booker Prize was originally £21,000, and was subsequently raised to £50,000 in 2002 under the sponsorship of the Man Group, making it one of the world’s richest literary prizes.

The selection committee of the prize consists of a writer, two publishers, a literary agent, a book seller, a librarian and a chair person appointed by the Booker Prize foundation. The membership of the judges changes each year and are selected by the advisory committee. The judges are selected from the class of literary writers, critics, academicians, public figures (related to literature) etc. The winner of the award is usually announced in the early October in a big event.

India has won this award 3 times. First time was when Arundhati Roy won it for ‘God of Small Things’ in 1997. The next time was in 2006, when Kiran Desai won it for ‘The Inheritance of Loss’ and the latest being in 2008 when Aravind Adiga won for ‘White Tiger’.

They have released the final list of nominees of the ‘Man Booker Prize’ for the year 2016.
